Unwanted Hair

Medical conditions causing excess hair include:

Hirsutism is a condition where women have hair growth at sites usually seen in men (e.g beard growth, excessive hair on chest, abdomen or inner thighs). This can arise as a result of an underlying hormonal problem such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). There is also great variation between different ethnic groups in what is 'normal'. Patients with a hormonal basis to their unwanted hair growth may benefit from medication or from the use of Vaniqa, a recently released Cream.

Hypertrichosis occurs where there is excessive hair growth at body sites not associated with sexual development. This can occur with some birthmarks and with some medical conditions.

Although there are some medical conditions that cause excess hair, many people simply prefer not to have visible hair such as underarm and bikini line.

Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, waxing and depilatory creams have to be repeated and can give rise to troublesome and unsightly rashes.

At the Shropshire Skin Clinic we treat clients with Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal using either our Lumenis Quantum or Palomar Starlux 500 systems.

Before and after photos of a patient who suffered scaring to the legs as a result of  ingrowing hairs.  After a number of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment sessions over 12 months, the improvement is clear to see.
